A Great Family Trip Doesn’t Require a Second Mortgage
The travel industry wants you to believe that a proper family holiday requires a luxury resort package, a business class flight, and daily spa treatments. It doesn’t. Some of the most joyful family trips I know of happened in guesthouses with plastic chairs, on overnight trains, and at destinations that most travel agents wouldn’t mention in the same breath as ‘family holiday.’
The eight destinations below are budget-verified — a family of four can genuinely have a meaningful, memorable trip at each of them for under ₹50,000 including transport, accommodation, food, and activities.
1. Coorg, Karnataka — ₹35,000–45,000 for 4
Four days in Coorg: a plantation homestay (₹2,500–4,000/night for a family cottage), the Abbey Falls trail, Dubare Elephant Camp (₹250–350 per person), the Raja’s Seat viewpoint, and enough fresh coffee to recalibrate your caffeine baseline. The drive from Bangalore (250km) is part of the experience.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO World Heritage), the botanical gardens, the horse riding at Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak, and the extraordinary Sim’s Park in Coonoor — all manageable in 3-4 days and genuinely delightful for children of most ages.

3. Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu — ₹28,000–38,000 for 4
Pondicherry is arguably India’s most underrated family destination. The French Quarter is strollable and safe. The beaches are clean by South Indian standards. The Auroville Visitor Centre and Matrimandir grounds are genuinely interesting for curious children. And the food — both Tamil and Franco-Tamil — is excellent and affordable.
4. Munnar, Kerala — ₹32,000–45,000 for 4
Three nights in Munnar covering Eravikulam National Park (Nilgiri Tahr viewing), the tea museum, Mattupetty Dam and Indo-Swiss Farm, and the short Chithirapuram waterfall walk. Budget plantation guesthouses provide family rooms from ₹2,000–3,500/night.
5. Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh — ₹35,000–48,000 for 4
The paragliding capital of India, Bir Billing is also one of Himachal’s most charming small towns — Tibetan monasteries, craft workshops, mountain views, and the Billing takeoff site where you can watch professionals launch. Family tandem paragliding from ₹2,500 per person. Accommodation from ₹800–2,000/night.
6. Hampi, Karnataka — ₹22,000–35,000 for 4
Hampi is one of India’s most extraordinary historical landscapes — the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, spread across a surreal boulder-strewn plateau on the Tungabhadra River. Cycling between ruins, crossing the river by coracle (round wicker boat), and exploring the Vittala Temple complex are family activities with no equivalent in India.
💡 Pro Tip: Stay on the Hippie Island (Virupapur Gadde) side of the river for a quieter, more atmospheric base at significantly lower prices than the main Hampi side.
7. Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh — ₹28,000–40,000 for 4
Madhya Pradesh’s only hill station is dramatically undervisited. Bee Falls, Duchess Falls, Pandava Caves, Jata Shankar cave temple, and Dhupgarh Peak (highest point in the Satpura range) — all within easy reach of the hill town. MPTDC guesthouses offer excellent value family accommodation.
8. Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand — ₹35,000–48,000 for 4
July to September, the Valley of Flowers National Park bursts with 500+ species of alpine wildflowers in a high-altitude meadow at 3,658m. The trek from Govindghat is 13km and takes two days return — appropriate for children aged 8 and above with good fitness. The experience is genuinely unforgettable and unlike any other family holiday in India.
