Everything Is Included. Except When It Isn’t.
‘All-inclusive’ is one of hospitality’s most marketed and least consistently defined terms. At one resort it means meals, drinks, water sports, and entertainment. At another it means three meals and a welcome drink. Understanding exactly what you’re buying before you book is the difference between a pleasantly surprising stay and a resentment-inducing one.
This guide explains how all-inclusive resorts actually work, what the typical inclusions and exclusions are, and whether the format suits your travel style.
What’s Typically Included
- All meals: Usually breakfast buffet, lunch buffet or à la carte, dinner with at least one formal setting
- Standard drinks: Soft drinks, standard spirits, local beer, house wine throughout the day
- Non-motorized water sports: Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling equipment
- Beach/pool access: Towels, sun loungers, umbrella service
- Entertainment: Evening shows, kids’ club activities, cultural performances
- Some land activities: Tennis, volleyball, fitness center
What’s Usually NOT Included (Check Before Booking)
- Premium spirits, imported wines, or specialty cocktails
- Motorized water sports: Jet ski, banana boat, parasailing
- Spa and wellness treatments (almost always extra)
- Off-resort excursions and tours
- Premium restaurants within the resort
- Room service (sometimes included, often not)
- Minibar restocking beyond basic water
How to Actually Enjoy an All-Inclusive
Use It to Not Decide
The best thing about all-inclusive is the removal of food and drink decisions from your holiday. Use this. Don’t spend mental energy calculating meal costs or searching for restaurants. Accept that the food will be resort food — which means variety over excellence — and let that simplicity be the point.
Get Out at Least Once
Even one half-day excursion off the resort — to a local market, a nearby town, a cultural site — prevents the slight claustrophobia that can come from spending an entire holiday within one perimeter. Most resorts have excellent excursion desks; use them for at least one trip.
Book Spa In Advance
Spa slots at popular all-inclusives fill quickly. Book any wellness treatments at check-in, not on day three when everything is gone.
💡 Pro Tip: Read recent reviews specifically mentioning ‘what’s not included’ before booking any all-inclusive. The pattern of complaints in reviews reveals the gap between the marketing and the reality more accurately than any official description.
